Professor Michael Solomon is a mining engineer with 42 years of management and technical experience in the gold, platinum, diamond and coal sectors. Among other positions, Michael served as Senior Mining Engineer for SRK Consulting, Principal Mining Engineer for Bateman Projects (Van Eck and Lurie) and Principal Mining Engineer and Director Mining for the Mineral Corporation. Michael was the founding Chief Executive of Wesizwe Platinum Limited, a main-board JSE-listed mining company that he took from early-stage exploration in 2004 to listing in 2005, and the onset of capital construction in 2011. Michael also has extensive experience drafting and advising on government policy in South Africa and internationally. He is a Fellow of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, where he has served as a Member of Council of the Institute for the last decade and for which he chairs the ESG Committee. He is also a member of the Agricultural Economists Association of South Africa. Michael served as an Independent Non-executive Director on the Board of ASX-listed Gold One as Chairman of the Audit and Risk Committee and also on the Health, Safety and Environment Committee. He recently served on the Board of the United Nations Global Compact in South Africa and is currently a Non-executive Director of the Federation for a Sustainable Environment. Michael is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cape Town, where he specializes in the economic diversification and decarbonization of mines.
