KGOSI NYALALA PILANE

NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Appointed: December 2024

Qualifications: Leadership in Traditional Governance, Community Development, and Economic Planning

Key skills include: Community engagement, stakeholder negotiation, infrastructure development, education support, and governance in traditional contexts.

Kgosi Nyalala Molefe John Pilane is the Senior Traditional Leader of the Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela (BBK) Traditional Community, comprising 32 villages and an estimated population of 350,000. Since his inauguration, he has blended traditional authority with progressive strategies to improve his community’s quality of life.

Passionate about education, Kgosi Pilane launched the Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela Bursary Scheme, which has enabled over 700 learners to access tertiary studies, producing professionals across sectors. Recognising rural-urban digital inequality during the COVID-19 pandemic, he initiated a Wi-Fi rollout across villages to support digital access for learners and the broader community.

Under his leadership, the BBK community developed a Long-Term Master Plan for Integrated Economic Development, laying the groundwork for a Post-Apartheid Smart City in Moruleng. Major achievements include the construction of roads, water infrastructure, a soccer stadium, cultural museum, mall, and administration offices—all self-funded through resources negotiated by Kgosi Pilane.

Future plans include an eco-estate within a Big 5 Game Reserve and a multi-purpose housing project to promote sustainable development and inclusive growth.

He led negotiations that secured a 27% community stake in Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine and shares in the Sibanye Rustenburg Platinum Mine. He also founded Itireleng Bakgatla Platinum Resources, which led to the establishment of Sedibelo Resources.

His public service includes roles on the North-West Parks and Tourism Board, the Heritage Resources Council, and AgriBoard. He also operated a wholesale supply service for hospitals and hotels.

As Deputy President of CONTRALESA since 2014, Kgosi Pilane champions the role of traditional leadership within South Africa’s democratic framework, reinforcing his commitment to bridging heritage and innovation.
